Several of the actresses on the show had extended guest runs on Frasier. Jean Smart (Deborah) won a guest Emmy for playing Frasier's high school crush Lorna/Lana Lynley. Jane Adams, who plays Ava's mother, appeared as Niles's love interest Dr. Mel Karnofsky, and Harriet Sansom Harris, who plays Deborah's old friend/competitor Susan, was Frasier's agent Bebe Glazer.
Ava's parents are heavily based on co-creator Jen Statsky's parents; particularly her mother, who suffered from severe agoraphobia.
