IMDbHacksaw Ridge is a war drama movie that revolves around the real life story of Desmond T Doss, an American combat medic who served during World War II. The film follows the medic as he enlists in the army despite his pacifist beliefs and is sent to fight in the Battle of Okinawa. Doss refuses to carry a weapon, instead opting to save lives as a medic, and is admired for his heroic efforts. The film is known for its stunning visuals and the emotional quotient that it brings to the forefront through war sequences. Furthermore, performances by the cast including Andrew Garfield as Ava and Vince Vaughn as Nathan make it an endearing watch. Director Mel Gibson has managed to present a heartwarming story of war and peace by showing the parallels beautifully. However, some may complain of a highly-graphic glorification of violence throughout. Overall, Hacksaw Ridge is a gripping and poignant film that will leave a lasting impact on viewers.

When asked how many lives he saved, Desmond T. Doss said approximately fifty. However, witnesses said it was closer to one hundred. A mutual agreement was reached at approximately seventy-five.
According to director Mel Gibson, Desmond T. Doss's son, Desmond Jr, attended the screening and was moved to tears by Andrew Garfield's accurate portrayal of his dad.
While at the end of the movie it says Desmond saved seventy-five men by directly lowering them from the escarpment, he also treated around fifty-five more who were able to retreat without further assistance. Over the course of his tour, which lasted approximately three weeks, he rescued nearly three hundred men.
Hal B. Wallis had previously tried to buy this story from Desmond T. Doss in the 1950s, and hoped that Audie Murphy would star. Doss didn't want his story turned into a typical Hollywood movie.
Mel Gibson said that the battle scenes were influenced by nightmares he had during his childhood, when his father Hutton Gibson, a World War II veteran who served in Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater, described the horrors he witnessed as bedtime stories.
"[repeated line] Desmond Doss: Help me get one more."
"Desmond Doss: I don't know how I'm going to live with myself if I don't stay true to what I believe."
