Avatar Review

Avatar is a science fiction film set in the year 2154 on the planet Pandora, and revolves around a former Marine, Jake Sully, who is brought to Pandora to work as an avatar, a genetically engineered hybrid of human and the planet's native species, the Na'vi. As he begins to interact with the Na'vi and learn their ways, he becomes embroiled in a conflict between the humans and the Na'vi over the planet's resources. This is one of those James Cameron masterpieces that you should watch at least once before you die. The visual effects are superbly stunning as is the epic plot that is unimaginable even in your wildest dreams. While there are some flaws including the predictable nature of the direction, it is also appreciated for being a memorable and engaging cinematic experience. All in all, Avatar is a visually stunning and entertaining sci-fi epic that is well worth a watch.

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The Na'vi language was created entirely from scratch by linguist Dr. Paul R. Frommer. James Cameron hired him to construct a language that would be easily enunciable for actors to pronounce but would not resemble any human language. Frommer created about 1,000 words. Cameron requested Dr Frommer that the Na'vi language must be entirely new, as it's supposed to be from another planet, and that it should sound "nice" to the audience. Cameron didn't want any additional editing done to their voices and wanted them to sound authentic and not unnatural. Equipped with a vast knowledge of linguistics, Dr Frommer understood what kinds of sounds the Na'vi language would or wouldn't have. Just like "j" and "r" don't exist in Korean, in English, the 'h' sound is unaspirated. In a similar vein, Frommer's conception of the new language totally avoided the sounds of "ch", "th", and "sh". Additionally, Frommer had to decide on the language's syntax -- or rules regarding word order. He came up with his own set of constraints and words to be used in the language of Pandora. The tongue took inspiration from the natural languages of the world to create a totally different spoken form.

At the time of auditioning, Sam Worthington was living in his car.

This movie took four years to make, from pre-production to release.

Most of the animal noises heard in the movie are recycled dinosaur noises from Jurassic Park (1993), notably the T-Rex and the Raptors'.

James Cameron originally planned to have the film completed for release in 1999. At the time, the special effects he wanted increased the budget to $400 million. No studio would fund the film, and it was shelved for eight years.

Popular Dialogues

"Jake Sully: Neytiri calls me skxawng. It means "moron.""

"Jake Sully: Look, I know you probably don't understand this... [Neytiri ignores him and speaks Na'vi] Jake Sully: Thank you. [Neytiri speaks Na'vi] Jake Sully: That was pretty impressive. I would have been screwed if you hadn't come along. [Neytiri stands up and leaves. Jake follows her] Jake Sully: Hey, wait a second! Where are you goin'? Wait up! Just, hey, slow down! I just wanted to say thanks for killin' those things... [Neytiri hits him with her bow] Jake Sully: Aah! Damn! Neytiri: Don't thank. You don't thank for this! This is sad. Very sad only. Jake Sully: Okay, okay. I'm sorry. Whatever I did, I'm sorry. Neytiri: All this is your fault. They did not need to die. Jake Sully: My fault? They attacked me! How am I the bad guy? Neytiri: Your fault! Your fault. Jake Sully: Easy. Easy... Neytiri: You are like a baby. Making noise, don't know what to do. Jake Sully: Easy. Shh. Fine. Fine. If you loved your little forest friends... why not let them kill my ass? What's the thinking? Neytiri: Why save you? Jake Sully: Yeah. Yeah, why save me? Neytiri: You have a strong heart. No fear. But stupid! Ignorant like a child! [Neytiri walks away and Jake follows after her] Jake Sully: Well, if I'm like a child, then look, maybe you should teach me. Neytiri: Sky People cannot learn, you do not See. Jake Sully: Then teach me how to See. Neytiri: No one can teach you to See."
