For this film's "sneak preview screening" day, (on Sunday, June 19, 2005), Disney offered free tickets to anyone named Herbert or any derivation thereof (Herb, Herbie, et cetera).
When Maggie buys Herbie from Crazy Dave, she pays $75, which was the same amount of money that Jim Douglas paid to buy him in the original The Love Bug (1968).
Before release, Disney decided that Lindsay Lohan was a bit too busty for the image they wanted for the film, and used digital techniques to reduce her bust size.
Director Angela Robinson said in the commentary that she purposely left hidden crew equipment and cheap camera tricks in the film to give Herbie fans something to look for that was fun, and also just to simply aggravate her editor, who practically begged her to fix the problems before the film was released.
Four Herbies were made for the rail-riding stunt in the first race. One was made to jump up the rail, and two were made to ride on the rail.
"Jeff Gordon: This car just winked at me. Jimmie Johnson: A racecar just winked at you? Jeff Gordon: I swear. The car just winked at me. Jimmie Johnson: Are you feeling OK? Is it the pressure?"
"Kevin: [shouting during a race] Come on Maggie!... I mean, Maxi!"
