Sterling Holloway also did a screen test to perform the voice of Garfield but Lorenzo Music won the audition.

Numerous lines from this TV special are actual jokes from Garfield books published before it aired.

Some parts of the special were later reused for Garfield (2004).

Besides her contribution to the music, Desirée Goyette also served as the performance model for Garfield's dance during the title song.

"Here Comes Garfield" is the only time that Sandy Kenyon would provide the voice for Jon. After "Garfield on the Town" Thom Huge replaced Sandy Kenyon as Jon. Thom Huge voiced Jon until his retirement in 1994. Wally Wingert has voiced Jon since 2007.
