IMDbSir Alec Guinness and Sir Anthony Quayle made this movie during the two month break in the shooting of Lawrence of Arabia (1962), when the production moved from Jordan to Spain. Upon finishing this movie, both returned to Lawrence of Arabia (1962).
The tune to which the sailors dance the hornpipe is Cock O' the North, by an unknown composer. There is no printed record of it prior to 1816, but it is quite possible that it was known as a folk tune during or prior to 1797.
The HMS Defiant was 'played' by the 'Marcel B Surdo', a wooden cod fishing boat rebuilt as a mid-size late 18th. frigate. It was a very accurate replica, and was featured in several films set in this period.
The ship which played the Defiant, the Marcel B Surdo, sank at her dock in Tampa, Fl in October of 1981. She had been neglected for many years and sank while being prepared for a rebuild. The US Coast Guard deemed her a hazard to shipping resulting the the wreck being blown up and disposed of.
Like many British actors of their generation, Sir Alec Guinness, Sir Dirk Bogarde, and Sir Anthony Quayle were veterans of World War II, and served with distinction. However, this movie reverses their ranks. Major Bogarde and Major Quayle both outranked Sub-lieutenant Guinness in reality.
"Lieut. Scott-Padget: [Scott-Padget turns back to the Captain as he begins to exit] You may have the power of life and death over every man about this ship, sir, but I warn you: if we come through this voyage safely... Captain Crawford: [Crawford looks up from his work] Yes? If? Lieut. Scott-Padget: To have followed Admiralty instructions may not be quite be enough. Captain Crawford: [Crawford smacks his desk, jumps up and approaches Scott-Padget] I will say this to you only once, sir: I will not be bullied or threatened and I intend to be obeyed! Your friends in London mean nothing to me! I assure you that while you serve aboard this ship, they will mean absolutely nothing to you! You can go now."
"Lieut. Scott-Padget: What is your name? Wagstaffe: Wagstaffe. Percival Pallister Wagstaffe. Lieut. Scott-Padget: Wagstaffe? Are you by any chance related to Admiral Wagstaffe? Wagstaffe: Remotely, yes. He's a distant cousin. Lieut. Scott-Padget: But he would speak for you? Wagstaffe: Well, I'm quite sure that he... Lieut. Scott-Padget: Admiral Wagstaffe - how well do you know him? Wagstaffe: Intimately. Lieut. Scott-Padget: You visit his house? Wagstaffe: Oh, yes, often. Lieut. Scott-Padget: You claim that, do you? Do you also claim to be a mad-man? For to have constantly visited someone who does not exist? Wagstaffe: Not exist! Would I not know my own cousin? Lieut. Scott-Padget: I invented him a moment ago."
