Craig Robinson came up with the Michael Jackson joke used in the trailer, as well as the "It must be some kind of hot tub time machine" line that he deadpans directly into the camera.
In an interview, John Cusack stated that he made his decision to join the cast of this film almost entirely based off of the title.
When they're on the mountain, a guy skis past, talking on a mobile phone, and says, "...I want my two dollars!", a reference to the deranged bikeriding paperboy in Better Off Dead... (1985), starring John Cusack.
When the boys travel back in time and open their suitcases to find Adam's filled with drugs, Jacob asks "Who are you, Hunter S. Thompson?" John Cusack was actually very good friends with Hunter S. Thompson. Cusack was also considered to play Hunter S. Thompson, a.k.a. Raoul Duke, in the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), (before the role went to Johnny Depp).
When the guys first realise they're in the '80s, and images are flashing up on the television, there is one shot of Chevy Chase from his appearance in a Paul Simon music video, "You Can Call Me Al" from 1986, which is the year the film is set. Chase plays the repairman in this film.
"Lou: Here's a question. Was it morally wrong for me to exploit my knowledge of the future for personal financial gain? Perhaps. Here's another question. Do I give a fuck?"
"Jacob: I'm kinda right in the middle of a thing right now, but can I text you later? Girl at Club: Can you what? Jacob: Are you online at all? Girl at Club: I have no idea what you're talking about. Jacob: How do I get a hold of you? Girl at Club: You come find me. Jacob: That sounds... exhausting."
