In "Hypnotic," a silly but never dull sci-fi thriller starring Ben Affleck as a Texas officer who uncovers a network of mind-controlling criminals, there is a lot of white space. Or he appears to find them by accident. Our distressed hero, whose daughter has already vanished before the movie even begins, finds reality buckling and warping around him. Now, William Fichtner's character as Detective Daniel Rourke, a mind-controlling "hypnotic," alternates between being pursued and being eluded by him. The main (and only) suspect in a bizarre bank robbery that left Rourke stunned and holding a Polaroid of his daughter Minnie (Hala Finley) is Fichtner's buddy. The photographer's strange handwriting directs Rourke to "Find Lev Dell Rayne." The emotional stakes in "Hypnotic," a grandiose, supposedly mind-bending chase thriller where A-listers saunter into an unimpressive surprise, might be greater, but that's part of the fun. How much you want to see Rodriguez and the group strive to rip a worn rug out from under you will determine how much you appreciate it. "Hypnotic" is endearing in its own awkward way, even though it may not be intelligent or engaging enough to prevent your attention from wandering.
