In preparation for filming her directorial debut, Angelina Jolie watched the multiple award-winning Bosnian war film Remake (2003), based on a true, autobiographical story by Zlatko Topcic.
Shot back to back in two versions, one in English and the other in the native Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian.
It is rumored that Brad Pitt has a cameo as one of the sniper victims.
Marija Karan, Branko Tomovic and Branka Katic were also considered for the lead roles.
Angelina Jolie talked about filming the sex scenes in an interview: "You kind of suddenly feel this strange thing of asking people to participate in anything like that because they're not a real couple. You find out how strange this is to ask anybody to get naked together and put a camera on them. [The actors] actually made me more comfortable. I was being a lot more prudish. I would have allowed them to be more prudish and they told me it was all right and important for the story. They wanted to do what they wanted to do and they were comfortable."
"Danijel: [aiming rifle at Ajla] I asked myself, "Why is it so easy for some men to kill the other?" [rifle down] Danijel: And then I wondered, "Would she kill me if she had the chance?""
"Danijel: It's politics, not murder. The politics of all this are very complicated. Ajla: It is murder... for political gain. But still murder."
