John Rhys-Davies had expressed interest in reprising his role as Sallah from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). It was revealed in 2022 that he would indeed appear in the film.

Rumors of Chris Pratt and even Bradley Cooper possibly assuming the titular role of Indiana Jones were laid to rest as of October 27, 2015 with confirmation from the studios attached that Harrison Ford would be reprising the role of Indy. Ford subsequently stated in 2019 that he didn't want his character to be recast, saying "When I'm gone, he's gone. It's easy". He later confirmed in 2022 that the fifth film would be his last time playing the character.
In early 2015, Martin Villeneuve penned an unsolicited script proposal for a fifth or even sixth installment of the Indiana Jones series based on an idea he had pitched to his older brother Denis Villeneuve who was then about to direct Blade Runner 2049 (2017) starring Harrison Ford. The Villeneuve brothers, both huge fans of Indiana Jones, tried to have Kathleen Kennedy read this screenplay, described by Denis as being "nearly perfect," for Steven Spielberg's consideration to direct.
