Rotten TomatoesA wealthy couple named James (Alexander Skarsgrd) and Em Foster (Cleopatra Coleman) are on vacation at an all-inclusive island resort in the imaginary nation of Li Tolqa when the plot of this gritty thriller with a current setting is introduced. James, a well-known author, accidently kills a guy in this present environment serves as the backdrop for the storyline of this grim thriller, his automobile, and the sleazy local police sentence him to death. James decides to take the ludicrous option of paying to have a duplicate of himself made so the copy will take responsibility and be executed. As a result, a deranged James is presumed dead and is free to murder without being held accountable, providing Cronenberg with a range of morally grey and gory possibilities to consider. Star Skarsgrd called the movie "so twisted, dark and sick, completely absurd" in an interview with the Swedish publication Damernas Värld. It happens in a resort in a made-up nation where there is anarchy, gloom, and bizarre riots, and I battle with myself. Additionally, the actor noted that his character is "a cute and humble Canadian, and it stands as an incredible contrast to the film."

It is rumored that Robert Pattinson was offered the lead role, but passed.
Made more money in its first week than Crimes of the Future did in its entire theatrical run. The latter film was directed by Brandon Cronenberg's father, David Cronenberg.
"James Foster: What's going on? Gabi Bauer: Someone's making a statement. One of the locals, I'd guess. James Foster: What do you think he's trying to say? Gabi Bauer: He's saying that he wants to put a knife right through here. And after you die, he'll hang your body at the airport to scare off the other tourists. James Foster: Seems a bit extreme. Gabi Bauer: The Li Tolqans are a melodramatic people."
"Em Foster: You're so frozen these days I can't even tell if you're sleeping or awake."
