At a very early stage, Dalton Trumbo considered Steve Martin for the role of Joe Bonham. Martin was dating Trumbo's daughter at the time.
The film was a minor success when it was originally released. It became a well-known cult film in 1989 when it was included in the Metallica video "One" (1989). Eventually, the band bought the rights to the film so they could keep showing their music video (and using clips in live performances) without having to pay royalties.
Metallica used this story as the basis for their song One, appearing on the 1988 release '...And Justice For All'. The official promotional video also contained several clips form the original movie. The band has also integrated clips into their live performances of the song
The scenes with Jesus Christ are written by Luis Buñuel.
Dalton Trumbo was bitterly disappointed when Walter Matthau turned down the part of Joe's father.
"Hospital Offical: He won't wait for an answer. All he says is, "Kill me, kill me, kill me." Third Doctor: Don't you have some message for him, Padre? [Priest shakes his head and looks to the floor] Third Doctor: You could at least tell him to put his faith in God, couldn't you? Priest: I'll pray for him for the rest of my days. But I will not risk testing his faith against your stupidity. Third Doctor: Well you're a hell of a priest, aren't you? Priest: He's the product of your profession, not mine."
"Joe: I don't know whether I'm alive and dreaming or dead and remembering."
