Scarlett Johansson is a huge fan of the franchise ever since she was a child. She spent the last ten years before this film was announced trying to join the franchise, saying she would have been fine with appearing in one only to die in the first five minutes of it if it meant she could be part of it.
Jonathan Bailey not only stars as Dr. Henry Loomis, but also contributes musically to the film. He plays clarinet in several orchestral tracks on the score and performs the solo heard during the scene when his character touches a dinosaur for the first time.
Gareth Edwards "dropped everything" to direct the film, stating before production, "I was about to take a break and I started writing my next idea for a film and this is the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in. I love Jurassic Park (1993)...so this opportunity is like a dream to me. And to work with Frank Marshall and Universal and David Koepp, who's writing the script, I think they're all legends. So I'm just very excited."
A school bus in New York City is seen with "Crichton Middle School" painted on its side. This is a reference to the late Michael Crichton, the author of the Jurassic Park novel that spawned the film franchise.
Jonathan Bailey wanted to sit in the with the musicians doing the score for the movie. He played clarinet at school and Alexandre Desplate who was in charge of the music asked if he wanted to play a solo Jonathan was game. The music that is heard when Jonathan's character touches a dinosaur for the first time is actually him playing. His clarinet solo references "Inpark", a theme from Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis.
