The name of the Wicked Witch, Elphaba, was created by taking the phonetic pronunciation of the original "Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum's initials, L-F-B, which became Elphaba.
It was been reported many times that Idina Menzel wanted to portray Elphaba in this version, however she eventually revealed that she thought she was too old for the role. During an interview with Andy Cohen she said would happily have a smaller cameo such as Melena, the wicked witch's mother.
It was announced in February 2019 that Stephen Daldry was to direct the film from a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, who respectively wrote the book, and the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical. Due to COVID-19 related production In October 2020, it was announced that Daldry had left the project due to scheduling conflicts, including a lack of available studio space in London, where he had planned to film. In February 2021, it was announced that Jon M. Chu was directing the film and it was set to be filmed in Georgia in spring 2022. In October 2021, it was announced that film production would move back to the UK and was delayed pending completion of Sky Studios in London. The film is set to begin shooting in June 2022 and will be the first film production to use the newly-built studio.
Based on the stage musical of the same name, which was based on Gregory Macguire. The musical opened in San Francisco at the Curran Theatre, before opening on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in New York.
Amanda Seyfried was actively pursuing the role of Glinda before Ariana Grande was cast. Seyfried stated in past interviews that she took voice lessons to prepare for her audition. While she was shooting 'The Dropout' series, she went back and forth and auditioned in person several times on the weekends to play Glinda.
