During some scenes and rehearsals, director Mark Waters had Mark Ruffalo wear an earpiece to receive his lines from Reese Witherspoon, who was not on the set, replicating the situation depicted in the film where David has to relay Elizabeth's messages to the others who can neither see nor hear her.
After receiving a proposal with a rough outline of the story, the producers bought the rights to the novel without having read the original French book.
Co-screenwriter Leslie Dixon suggested using the apartment where she used to live for shooting. She also suggested Jon Heder for the role of Darryl. Both of these suggestions were taken.
After a bad take while shooting, Mark Ruffalo jokingly jumped out of a window on the set. He landed on a catwalk just outside the window, but still scared the crew.
The wedding video David watches when he first encounters Elizabeth is actually that of an assistant of one of the filmmakers.
"Jack Houriskey: Why? David Abbott: Because I love her. I love her. [looks at Elizabeth] David Abbott: I do. I love you. Elizabeth Masterson: [taken aback and smiling] No one's ever said that to me before."
"Elizabeth Masterson: David? David Abbott: What? Elizabeth Masterson: Tell him thank you. David Abbott: We're really grateful, Jack. Jack Houriskey: I'm not doin' it for you. David Abbott: Oh. Then why are you doing it? Jack Houriskey: Because someday, trust me, I'm gonna need help movin' a body, and when that day comes, I don't wanna hear any shit from you."
