IMDbOne might not be appealed by a film with a title like Kama Sutra thinking that it will only be confined to adult content. But the film Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love is much more than just its intimate scenes. Most of the viewers will have a preconceived notion about this film thinking that this is a bold move by an Indian Filmmaker, making a film solely based on sex. In reality, this film is much more than just what its title suggests. It highlights many important elements relating to women and their needs. It talks about women, women's freedom, women's sexuality, women's power, and how in the end every heart seeks love and that is what anybody ultimately wants. Mira Nair's ability to balance the sexes is astounding. Indira Varma was absolutely fantastic. Sarita Choudhary has done brilliant work and overall this film should be watched by the appropriate audience.

When Indian authorities eventually became aware of the content of the film during shooting, the producers and the director were forced to bribe them as "protection money" to avoid prosecution.
In order to film in India, the production had to use a fake title "Tara and Maya". Indian authorities would not have permitted the film to be made there had they known its true title and content.
The movie was banned in India and Pakistan because of the erotic scenes.
During filming in India, government officials made visits to the set and the cast had to improvise fake scenes which avoided the nudity and sexuality that was critical to the plot.
Sarita Choudhury talked about performing her nude scenes in this film during a 2004 interview. "I was lucky to have a female director who was tasteful. Actual nudity in the film was less than its sensuality. Mira is very good at creating images that can get confused for nudity. I only believe in doing a nude scene when I trust the director. Usually up to the day before I am convinced I will say 'no' because my heart is full of fear. When I see French movies, I realise how normal it is for other cultures."
"Maya: Knowing love, I can allow all things to come and go, to be as supple as the wind and to face all things with great courage. My heart is a open as the sky"
"Maya: [At Tara's wedding] Oh Tara... all my life I have been wearing your used things. Now... something I have used will be yours forever."
