The interior set of the titular location is an exact replica of a real downtown Toronto corner store, Mimi Variety.
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who plays Mr. Kim/Appa, is ten years younger than Jean Yoon, who plays the wife/mother, Mrs. Kim/Umma.
Based on the successful 2011 play, which was a fringe production.
The exterior of the store is actually a store called Mimi's Variety but after season one, the owners kept the show sign up. The interior is a set built on a sound stage, which does not match the actual store's interior.
Renewed for a sixth season, but plans were canceled and the fifth season became the last when creators Ins Choi and Kevin White left for other projects.
