Kotthu Review

After a long absence, Kotthu is pleased to see Sibi Malayil return to form. With the exception of a few scenes where it uses musical interludes to further emphasize the emotion, the movie generally hits its emotional beats on the mark. One of the film's many powerfully emotional scenes features a man holding a weapon standing in a schoolyard with kids around as the camera follows him from above, a Mahatma Gandhi statue gradually coming into focus. Political killings are also highlighted through this movie. The way Kannur is portrayed in the movie isn't all that different from other movies that have tackled this topic. Kotthu doesn't break any new ground except from poignantly showing the toll that the politics of murder take on the families of the victims and the murderers. Unfortunately, despite the film's commendable message against political violence, it only reaffirms the points made repeatedly in television debates on the matter.
