The film was inspired from the 1997 film "Liar Liar" starring Jim Carrey.
Govinda and Sushmita Sen were previously cast together in David Dhawan's 1999 film "Biwi No. 1". Govinda walked out of the film due to a disagreement with Sushmita and was replaced by Salman Khan. Dhawan got them to resolve their differences and they worked together in this film for the first time.
Tara Deshpande was originally cast but was replaced by Rambha.
The film was originally titled "Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo".
Ekta Kapoor made her debut as a producer.
