TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The American theatrical and home video releases of this film included narration by Wilford Brimley (in third-person), which is absent from the UK version. DVD users can select "Director's Cut" in the DVD options, to watch the movie minus the narration.

By some accounts, tribes tested the true fear levels of the prisoners they captured by allowing the prisoners to have the ropes on them to be loose or even unteathered to see if they would try to run away.

Tab Murphy wrote the script in the early-1980s, and it took over 10 years to get financing for the movie. In a Chicago Tribune article, Murphy said, "This, to me, is a small, personal story, because it really is reflective of a lot of my interests growing up--the wilderness, Indians, animals, adventure..."

Final film of Parley Baer.

The Colonel of the "Bloodless" Third and cause of the massacre at Sand Creek was John Milton Chivington. Chivington was a Freemason and Abolitionist who none the less vehemently hated Native Americans. Despite being condemned for his actions by a military inquiry, the unrepentant Chivington escaped any punishment for the massacre by resigning his military commission shortly after Sand Creek. Ironically Tom Berenger would play Chivington ten years later in the mini series Into the West (2005).

Popular Dialogues

"Professor Lillian Stone: Look, Elvis is dead, the government is not hiding UFOs, and there are no Indians in the Oxbow."

"Professor Lillian Sloan: It's a little disconcerting to realize that the smartest member of our expedition's the dog."
