The title "Laughterhouse" was derived by dropping the "S" from the word "slaughterhouse" (a reference to the ultimate fate of the flock of geese).
In his autobiography "Acting My Life", Sir Ian Holm wrote at length about his decision to star in this and not another, better-paying movie he was offered simultaneously, as in making this movie, he met Dame Penelope Wilton, whom he later married.
Writer Brian Glover claimed he was inspired by Red River (1948), in which John Wayne drives a herd of cattle to Missouri.
