The script was written back in 1993. The writers brought it to the attention of Steven Soderbergh who then took it to the then-President of production at Universal Pictures, Casey Silver. It went into script limbo after Silver left the studio to become an independent producer. Soderbergh then came back and brought George Clooney along to make this movie.
While filming on-location near Travelers Rest, South Carolina, George Clooney dropped by a kids lemonade stand and paid the kids running the stand one hundred dollars apiece for his glass of lemonade.
Actor and director George Clooney claimed that he had re-written all but two scenes, and had asked the WGA for credit. When they denied his request, he removed himself as a voting member and changed his status to "Financial Core Member".
Carter Rutherford was loosely based on real-life football star Harold "Red" Grange. His agent in this movie, C.C. Frazier, was based on his real-life agent, C.C. Pyle.

"Jimmy 'Dodge' Connelly: [as they prepare to fight] I just want to say, stay away from my right knee. Carter Rutherford: Watch my left shoulder. Jimmy 'Dodge' Connelly: I will. Also, my right hindquarter. Behind my right thigh, but really, the *whole* hindquarter. Carter Rutherford: Well, you wouldn't punch me in the back, would you? Because I got a bad back. Jimmy 'Dodge' Connelly: No, never. Let's just go for the face. Carter Rutherford: Me too, just hit me in the face."
"Carter Rutherford: [Wants to fight Dodge over Lexie] Okay, we can do this right here, or we can go outside. Lexie Littleton: Get him, Dodge! Jimmy 'Dodge' Connelly: We got a game in five days. Lexie Littleton: What? Carter Rutherford: What, you think you're gonna hurt me? Jimmy 'Dodge' Connelly: I might. Lexie Littleton: Did you hear what he just called me? Jimmy 'Dodge' Connelly: He's a little drunk. Carter Rutherford: [Scoffs] I'm not drunk, you coward! Jimmy 'Dodge' Connelly: Really? Cause your sleeve's on fire."
