TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The scene in which Lenny does his act in a raincoat, near the end of the film, came from a real-life show that a student tape-recorded and sent to Dustin Hoffman. Lenny's lines are directly from the tape.

The character of Sherman Hart is based on Milton Berle. His real name wasn't used because Berle was still alive and there were fears he would sue for libel. The character uses all of Berle's mannerisms and trademark shtick, including sticking a cigar under his top lip.

The off-camera voice during the interview scenes is that of director Bob Fosse.

Al Pacino was offered the part of Lenny Bruce but turned it down. He later said he regretted it after seeing the film.

When Lenny picks up food at the Chinese restaurant, the proprietor inquires about his "wonderful wife." Lenny replies, "We're divorced." He responds, "You're better off." Lenny used this as a joke in his standup routine.

Popular Dialogues

"Lenny Bruce: What's the worst thing you can say to anybody? ''Fuck you, mister!'' That's really weird, because if l wanted to hurt you, l should say, ''Unfuck you, mister'' Because ''fuck you'' is really nice, man."

"Lenny Bruce: l'm not anti-Christ or anti-religion, l just think it's encouraging that people are leaving the Church and going back to God."
