The character of the Leprechaun in Origins is inspired by subterranean mole rats, not by Darby O'Gill's little people like previous films.
When WWE Studios announced they were rebooting the series as a vehicle for actual WWE Superstar/leprechaun Hornswoggle, many fans assumed he would be picking up the mantle and buckled shoes vacated by Warwick Davis and ushering in a new era of wise-acre ghoul. But the movie revealed the Leprechaun has nothing in common with the series at all.
Despite having very little screen time and no dialogue, Star Dylan Postl stated that he had never seen any of the previous Leprechaun (1993) films which the director told him "GOOD!", and he has since chosen not to view any, as he wanted his performance to be his own creation, without the influence of the prior films. When asked, he was glad he had never seen the other films and felt his version was better. And felt audience would walk out saying "What was the name of that other guy nobody cares about played the old one? Nobody cares."
The first film in the series to be released in theaters, albeit a limited theatrical run, since Leprechaun 2 (1994).
The director of the movie, Zach Lipovsky admitted he absolutely despised the original movies. And he wanted to make a scarier Leprechaun that was more grounded in reality. Ironically, this is the movie that fans to be considered the worst entry of the series for being too serious with no charm or humor.
"Sophie: Fuck you, lucky charms!"
"Sophie: This is what happens when you take its gold. You have to make amends. Until the debt has been repaid."
