Marmee is probably Louisa May Alcott's version of "Mommie". She was non-rhotic; meaning she and her fellow New Englanders did not pronounce their Rs. So she would have pronounced Marmee as "Mommy". "Mommy," the American pet name for "Mother", hadn't been written out in formal literature yet. Mark Twain had used "Ma" and "Pa" in Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, but no one had written out "Mommy" in a big formal book like this; this was the first one. Alcott's New Englander guess at that spelling was "Marmee". Although the movie's actors use the pronunciation "Mar-mee", it should be pronounced "Mah-mee".
At the end of the credits, the film is dedicated to two persons, one of whom is Polly Hannah Klaas, the 12-year-old girl who was kidnapped from her Petaluma, California, home in 1993 and later found murdered. Winona Ryder, much of whose youth was spent in Petaluma, joined in the highly publicized search effort and made a number of emotional appeals for the child's safe return.
"Laurie: I have loved you since the moment I clapped eyes on you. What could be more reasonable than to marry you? Jo March: We'd kill each other. Laurie: Nonsense! Jo March: Neither of us can keep our temper-... Laurie: I can, unless provoked. Jo March: We're both stupidly stubborn, especially you. We'd only quarrel! Laurie: I wouldn't! Jo March: You can't even propose without quarreling."
"Friedrich: But I have nothing to give you. My hands are empty. [entwines her hands with his] Jo: Not empty now."
