IMDbSony Pictures Classics was originally going to distribute the film in the USA but chose not to, citing controversy over the film's title, which they wanted to change. Warner Independent Pictures then picked up the film for US distribution.
As of May 2022 this is the last film to be directed by Albert Brooks. However he has continued to act in multiple projects for different directors in the years since.
This is the second film directed by Albert Brooks where his character is called by his real life name. He also used his real life name in his first directed film Real Life (1979).
The only other film directed by Albert Brooks along with his directorial debut Real Life (1979) to not gross at least $1 million at the domestic box office. All of his other directed films grossed over $1 million.
Albert Brooks offered Penny Marshall a cameo appearance because he had previously directed her brother Garry Marshall in a cameo in Lost in America (1985). Penny later offered Brooks the role of Josh Baskin in Big (1988) but Albert was uninterested in the part at thr time and the role went to Tom Hanks, and the film became a blockbuster hit. Since he directed her brother and felt bad for turning her earlier film down, Brooks wanted to compensate by having Penny appear in one of his directed movies. Her brother Garry encouraged her to participate when Albert offered her a role in this movie and she did.
