There was a month of pre-production during which the magic tricks were taught to the actors. This was to ensure that the actors were confident and able to do their tricks correctly by filming time.
With a few exceptions, all the magic tricks were practical, without any use of CGI.
The child actors stated that Adam Devine acted as a mentor to them, giving them advice and cracking them up between scenes.
Real-life magicians were employed to teach the actors and to maintain authenticity. Among them is acclaimed magician Justin Willman, who had worked with Gillian Jacobs on Love (2016).
Filming took place on Disney's Golden Oak Ranch.
