Muhteşem Yüzyıl is a prime time historical Turkish television series. It was originally broadcast on Show TV and then transferred to Star TV. It is based on the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, the longest reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and his wife Hürrem Sultan, a slave girl who became a Sultan.

Historical fiction about life and intrigue during the reign of Suleiman I, known in the west as Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Suleiman I was the tenth Emperor-Sultan, and the longest-reigning in the history of the Ottoman Empire. His reign began in 1520, when he was approximately 26 years old, continuing until his death in 1566, two months shy of his 72nd birthday, after 46 years on the throne.
Besides being known as Suleiman the Magnificent, Suleiman I was also known as: Suleiman the Lawgiver; Sultan of the Ottoman Empire; Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques; Islamic Caliph; Amir al-Mu'minin; and several other titles.
"Muhtesem Yüzyil" was awarded "Best Drama TV Series" at 39th Golden Butterfly Awards in 2012.
In real life, Sultan Süleyman chose to marry his close friend and grand vizier, Ibrahim Pasha, to a young woman of a very rich and prominent family of the Istanbul ruling elite class for political reasons. Ibrahim did not marry Süleyman's sister, Hatice Sultan. In May 1524, Süleyman gave a magnificent 2-week wedding celebration for Ibrahim and his bride, Muhsine Hatun, who was the granddaughter of Ibrahim's first slave master, Iskender Pasha. This fact was confirmed by Dr. Ebru Turan in her 2007 Ph.D. dissertation through newly found letters and documents and again reported in a journal article in 2009.
