IMDbMax Steel is a sci-fi/action film based on the Mattel line of games and toys that serves as an origin story aimed at tweens and teens. However, it fails to deliver an engaging plot regardless of age. Director Stewart Hendler's noisy, murky set pieces grow visually and tonally repetitive, and the story becomes increasingly confusing, leading to an unintentionally hilarious conclusion. The film stars Ben Winchell as Max McGrath, a shy 16-year-old who discovers that he can shoot blue-tinted streaks of liquid energy from his fingertips. His powers come to light when a drone-like, blue-eyed alien named Steel (voiced by Josh Brener) shows up to train Max in controlling them. Together, they become the superhero Max Steel. However, the film lacks clever, witty quips and falls flat. The only redeeming quality is Maria Bello's performance as Max's mother.
Budget 10,000,000 USD
Box Office Collection 6,272,403 USD

"Steel: [regarding Sofia] I don't know, Max. It seems like that girl creature must have put out some kind of mind control virus on you. We should probably kill her. Max McGrath: What? No."
"Steel: [regarding Sofia] The girl creature appears to cause increases in heart rate and respiration. Perhaps you should avoid contact with her. Max McGrath: Perhaps you should shut up. Steel: See? She has made you angry."
