All the footage for the film was comprised of 1600 hours of footage and was cut down to 2 Hours and 20 minutes.
According to 'James Hetfield' Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004) was originally to be a 6 part mini-series for VH1 inspired by the success of MTV's The Osbournes (2002). However, after seeing much of the footage the band felt this was not a direction they wanted to take their careers and bought out VH1's rights to the material and made the film as you see it today.
Due to the departure of full time bassist Jason Newsted, producer Bob Rock was asked to play bass on 'St. Anger'. Despite his acceptance of the temporary role Rock did not make any creative contributions to the album, and therefore didn't receive any writing credits.
Former Metallica members Jason Newsted and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth make appearances in this film.
"[Metallica is asked to record a radio promo] Lars Ulrich: Hey it's Lars from Metallica. I'm about to stick 50 grand up your ass... James Hetfield: ...One dollar at a time."
"Jason Newsted: At that time, the managers suggested that we have a psychotherapist come in. A man that meets with pro ball teams, you know - big-ego, big-dollar guys that can't get along, but have to make some kind of entity flow, so everybody else and everybody can make the money. And, uh, I actually said, "I think that this is really fucking *lame* - weak - that we cannot get together. Us! Look - the *biggest heavy band of all time*! The things we've been through and decisions we've made... about squillions of dollars and squillions of people... and this? We can't get over this?""
