TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Edward G. Robinson had played the Fredric March part on stage.

Kim Novak considered this her best performance.

When Jerry says he pays $240 per month in rent, that amount would equate to $2,025 in 2017.

In an article in the 12 March 1957 edition of Daily Variety, when Columbia won the bidding for the film rights to Chayefsky's play, the studio considered Spencer Tracy, Ernest Borgnine, and James Cagney for the lead.

In 1959, Fredric March was accorded the honor of reading the Gettysburg Address to a joint session of Congress on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. He accepted this role under the condition that the shooting schedule accommodate the Congressional performance. The film makers agreed.

Popular Dialogues

"Jerry Kingsley: Do you feel better? Betty Preisser: Why, Mr. Kingsley, I feel much better. Jerry Kingsley: You made a decision. Suddenly there's not such big, black clouds in the sky. There's an old European saying: I'm an old man, and I've had many troubles. And most of them never happened. And you're a young kid and you're very pretty. So, go wash your face, put on some lipstick, call up a friend, drink a beer with him."

"Walter Lockman: And when they bury me, they can put on the gravestone, 'His was a big waste of time.'"
