Most the Japanese air raid sequences are from Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970).
Scenes of Lieutenant Colonel James Harold "Jimmy" Doolittle's Tokyo raid at the beginning are from Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944). Robert Mitchum played pilot Bob Gray in Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) and Admiral William Halsey in this movie.
Toshirô Mifune's voice is dubbed by American actor Paul Frees. Frees was also the voice of the Burgermeister Meisterburger in the Rankin/Bass holiday production of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and also the voice of "The Ghost Host" at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. Mifune's real voice is heard speaking in his native Japanese in the film, "Hawai Middowei daikaikûsen: Taiheiyô no arashi," (English title, "Storm over the Pacific", 1960) in which he previously played Admiral Yamaguchi.
Kevin Dobson's character Ensign George Gay, was the sole survivor of Torpedo Squadron 8. Gay wrote a book about his experiences (Sole Survivor) and was an advisor on this film.
Most dogfight sequences come from 1942 newsreels, with considerable cropping to adapt the image to the Panavision framing.
"Vice Adm. Chuichi Nagumo: [commenting on the American torpedo bombers] They sacrifice themselves like samurai, these Americans."
"Captain Garth: Can I ask you something personal? Very personal? Commander Rochefort: Sure. Captain Garth: You know, it really stinks down here. How often do some of your people take a bath? Commander Rochefort: Bath? Hell, I don't know. What *day* is it?"
