Trivia

This movie was filmed in the Summer of 1982 in Tunisa but was not first released until late March 1984. The home video release was in 1985.

The novel "Misunderstood" (published in 1869) had previously been adapted as the Italian film Misunderstood (1966), which starred Anthony Quayle. This version is set in Tunisia, while the Italian version was set in Florence, Tuscany.

The picture's closing credits state: "This is a remake and adaptation of the film 'Incompreso' [See: Misunderstood (1966)] directed by Luigi Comencini from a screenplay written by Leo Benvenuti, Piero de Bernardi, Lucia Drudi Demby, Giuseppe Mangione."

The film's closing credits state: "The producers wish to express their grateful appreciation to the Tunisian Authorities and in particular the municipalities of Sidi Bou Said, Sousse, Monastir, Kairouan."

The picture was originally scheduled to open during October 1983 according to an article published in the 1st July 1983 edition of 'The New York Times' newspaper. However, when the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/United Artists (MGM/UA) studio obtained the film's USA domestic distribution rights, its release stateside got deferred until late March 1984 opening on about the 30th of the month. This new release time-frame was announced in an article published in the 9th March 1984 edition of show-business trade-paper 'Daily Variety'.

Popular Dialogues

"Mrs. Paley: [spoon-feeding soup to the small boy] Now just a little bit more. Do it for baby Jesus. Miles: Baby Jesus wouldn't eat this rotten junk."

"Miles: Can we go to the Souks and get a camel ride? Will: I would like to visit the cemetery again. What'd I say wrong? Miles: Yeah, let's go to the cemetery. We can see Mommy. Andrew: [remembering what he had heard at a local Arab funeral] Yeah, and afterwards we can kill a lamb and have a feast. Ned Rawley: Andrew, what are you talking about? Andrew: [suddenly withdrawn, sensing he has said something inappropriate] Nothing. Miles: [not giving up] Let's go. Ned Rawley: I don't think so. Will: Why not? Ned Rawley: 'Cause I don't think it's a good idea. Miles: Awww, shit. [Andrew and Uncle Will try to keep from laughing] Miles: Time for bed, right? [his father nods] Miles: Merd? [Uncle Will now laughs openly as Miles leaves the table]"
