Rotten TomatoesMr. Robot is a modern masterpiece of television that expertly blends suspenseful hacking drama with a complex exploration of the human psyche. Rami Malek's portrayal of Elliot Alderson is nothing short of outstanding. He brings a vulnerability to the character that is both captivating and heartbreaking. Christian Slater as "Mr. Robot" is equally mesmerizing, bringing a charming yet dangerous edge to the screen. One of the strongest aspects of the show is its writing. Creator Sam Esmail expertly weaves together intricate plotlines, keeping the audience on the edge of their seat with every twist and turn. The dialogue is sharp and thought-provoking, delving into complex themes such as capitalism, mental illness, and addiction. The show's aesthetic is also a standout feature. The main cast along with creator Sam Esmail went to hacking seminars in preparation for their roles. In addition, Rami Malek had a typing instructor to prepare scenes involving programming.
In the first season, actor Rami Malek (Elliot) used crushed vitamin B pills for scenes where he sniffs morphine, and used a special device hidden in his sleeve to vacuum the powder. He also allegedly used it to prank people off-set by lining up extraordinarily long lines of powder and "sniffing" them.
Creator Sam Esmail made this show after being disappointed with the poor portrayal of computer hacking.
There were 164 actors brought in before Sam Esmail and producers decided on Rami Malek.
For the sitcom sequence in the second season, creator Sam Esmail and his crew researched and consulted with other crew members who worked on 80's/90's multi-camera sitcoms, as well as learning how to film an episode in that format. For authenticity, Beta tapes and cameras were used to film the sequence as well as playing laugh tracks on-set.
"Mr. Robot: The world is a dangerous place, Elliott, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."
"Elliot: Oh, I don't know. Is it that we collectively thought Steve Jobs was a great man, even when we knew he made billions off the backs of children? Or maybe it's that it feels like all our heroes are counterfeit? The world itself's just one big hoax. Spamming each other with our running commentary of bullshit, masquerading as insight, our social media faking as intimacy. Or is it that we voted for this? Not with our rigged elections, but with our things, our property, our money. I'm not saying anything new. We all know why we do this, not because Hunger Games books makes us happy, but because we wanna be sedated. Because it's painful not to pretend, because we're cowards. Fuck society."
