IMDbThe name of the manor house where Miss Jane Marple conducts her inquiries is called Rutherford Hall in Dame Agatha Christie's novel. This was changed to Ackenthorpe in this movie to avoid comparison with the surname of Dame Margaret Rutherford (Miss Jane Marple).
The character of Miss Jane Marple's librarian friend, Jim Stringer, was not part of the original story (and never featured in any of the Christie books). The part was written for Stringer Davis, who was married to Dame Margaret Rutherford.
Despite privately remaining unimpressed by this movie, Dame Agatha Christie dedicated her 1962 book "The Mirror Crack'd From Side to Side" to Dame Margaret Rutherford, "in admiration".
Joan Hickson (Mrs. Kidder) starred as Miss Jane Marple in a later version of this story by Dame Agatha Christie's Miss Marple: 4:50 from Paddington (1987) and eleven other Miss Jane Marple television movies. In 1946 she had acted in a stage production of "Appointment with Death"; Agatha Christie was so impressed by her performance that she wrote to tell her "I hope one day you will play my dear Miss Marple".
Richard Briers received twenty-five pounds sterling for his scene as "Mrs. Binster", shot on the final day of filming.
"Ackenthorpe: Cod's as good as lobster any day, and much cheaper. Miss Marple: Well, that depends on whether or not one has a palate unsullied by cheap opiates. Ackenthorpe: If you mean what I think you mean, I'll have you know this cheroot cost two shillings! Miss Marple: Yes. Quite."
"Hillman: Don't think I won't tell him, neither. Alexander: Despite the double negatives, I'm sure you will."
