TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Jeff Goldblum was dubbed in all but one scene.

Cristina Raines has said that the film crew actually used the exterior and the interiors of the Brooklyn Heights brownstone for the film. Raines says a lot of strange things happened while they were shooting there, particularly when she was assigned an apartment to use as her dressing room and found out it was being rented by a priest.

Cristina Raines, under contract with Universal at the time, almost didn't get the leading role due to a female executive at Universal who was more interested in pushing other clients for parts and ignoring her. Raines was told this directly by Michael Winner, who went against the executive's wishes and cast her anyway. Cristina later said this may not have been for the best, however, and as she didn't like Winner's maddening approach to directing. The actress says she cried every day on her way to work, and admitted in a recent interview that she has never watched this film due to the treatment she received on the set.

There are 2 different versions of the movie. The "uncut" one on DVD and BRD feature catholic church, nudity and gore. The "censored" one for TV has all the church parts deleted and replaced by the "brotherhood of the sentinels".The nudity, gore and dream scenes have been deleted almost to the point of harming the understanding of the plot. Some stuff have been added though on the rare and unreleased censored version: random devil pictures, a devil ring, a chronology of the sentinels and the police scene "it was suicide". This version was only available on cable TV.

Michael Winner says in his memoirs he wanted Martin Sheen to play the male lead but the studio vetoed this saying he was a TV name.

Popular Dialogues

"Michael Lerman: It's all right. Listen, listen. I know everything now. The Latin you saw in that book was an ancient warning from the angel Gabriel to the angel Uriel. Alison Parker: Michael, what are you talking about? Michael Lerman: The angel Uriel was stationed at the entrance to Eden to guard it from the devil. Since that time a long line of guardians... sentinels, have guarded the world against evil. Right now it's Father Halliran upstairs. But tonight YOU become the next sentinel. All the people you saw here, the old man, the lesbians... all of them are reincarnations. Devils. The only way they can stop the new sentinal is to make you commit suicide. That's what they were trying to do. Alison Parker: [with growing fear and terror] Michael? I don't... Michael Lerman: You don't understand? I'm dead. I was killed a short while ago by Monsignor Franchino for trying to strangle Father Halliran. I'm damned to enternal Hell for my sins. For having Brenner murder my wife so I can be with you. And for killing Brenner to tie up loose ends. I am one of the legion of the dead!"

"Michael Lerman: Look at this. William O'Rourke. Father Halliran? William O'Rourke, disappeared July 12, 1952 after attempted suicide. Perry: They're the same man. William O'Rourke became a priest named Halliran. Michael Lerman: Yes, but why? Perry: I just open doors."
