"Neerja" is an extraordinary and extremely moving film that tells the true story of Neerja Bhanot, a courageous flight attendant who selflessly sacrificed her life to save passengers during a horrific hijacking.

The film portrays the courageous life of Neerja Bhanot, an air hostess who selflessly protected passengers during the hijacking of Pan Am Flight in Karachi in 1986. Sonam Kapoor delivers a compelling performance as Neerja, with Shabana Azmi shining as her mother. The story alternates between Neerja's daily life in Mumbai and the preparation of Libyan terrorists for their mission. Neerja's admiration for Rajesh Khanna is a recurring theme, adding depth to her character. As she boards Flight No 73 to New York via Karachi and Frankfurt, her boyfriend Shekhar (played by Shekhar Ravjiani) presents her with a heartfelt letter and birthday gift. Neerja's commitment as the chief stewardess is evident, but when the terrorists infiltrate the plane during a halt in Karachi, her quick thinking and warning to the pilots prevent the terrorists from flying the aircraft to Cyprus. Eventually, the Pakistani military successfully outwits the terrorists, with Neerja saving as many lives as possible. Tragically, she loses her life while protecting three unaccompanied minors. Her parents honor her memory by immersing her ashes and establishing the Neerja Bhanot Bravery Award. On the first anniversary of her death, her mother, Rama, tearfully expresses her pride and enduring grief. Neerja's bravery earns her the Ashok Chakra, making her the youngest recipient in India's history. She also receives the Tamgha E Insaaniyat Award from Pakistan and the Special Courage Award from the USA. This poignant film showcases Neerja's heroism and leaves a lasting impact, highlighting the immense sacrifices made by individuals in the face of terror.
