This is inspired by real life case of Sir Justice K Chandru, who later developed this case as a documented script for a movie.
The real case (upon which the movie is based on) dragged on for more than ten years in real life though it has been shown as, approximately, about a year long in this movie.
The real Rajakannu case (based on which the movie is made) was the longest habeas corpus case in the history of Chennai High Court, Tamil Nadu, India!
After the film's release actor Surya received many death threats from various communities in India. Various communities criticised that actor/producer Surya had deliberately manipulated the real events in his film, in view of making a clash between "Vanniyars" and "Irulars" communities. After receiving death threats, Surya was provided special police protection at his residence.
M. K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, praised the film saying it had occupied his thoughts all night long. He stated that the core issue of the film reminded him of his own time in prison when arrested in 1976 under MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act, 1971) during the emergency period, and that his heart felt very heavy after watching the film. He congratulated Suriya and Gnanavel, and the entire film unit, saying that he wished more such films were made. He complimented Suriya's donation of 1 crore (US$130,000) to the Pazhangudi Irular Trust for their education.
"Chandru: I don't believe in luck, sir. I believe in truth."
