Daniel Day-Lewis and Judi Dench worked together on-stage in a 1989 production of "Hamlet", as Hamlet and Gertrude. Day-Lewis infamously broke down during a scene and abruptly left the stage, never to return. Before filming began for this movie, Day-Lewis sent Dench a note saying, "I promise not to run out on you this time."
When it was decided to make a play out of Federico Fellini's 8½ (1963), the rights were easy to obtain from Fellini; his only condition was that neither his name nor the title 8 1/2 should be connected to it.
Kate Hudson mentioned in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in November 2009 that it took about six weeks to rehearse her number "Cinema Italiano", and about two days to film. She also said that making the movie was "maybe my best experience to date".
Nicole Kidman began rehearsals just four weeks after giving birth to her daughter.
When Judi Dench was cast, her manager (who also manages Daniel Day-Lewis) sent the script to him, and he in turn called up director Rob Marshall. Marshall stated in an interview that he thinks Day-Lewis is the "best" actor around, and that he never considered offering him the part because he didn't think he would take it. Day-Lewis was keen to take a break after his last movie, but said he knew that making this movie would be an unbelievable experience.
"Luisa Contini: Thank you. Guido Contini: What for? Luisa Contini: Thank you for reminding me I'm not special. You don't even see what you do, do you? Even the moments I think are ours, it's just you working to get what you want."
"Saraghina: So, you little Italian devils, you want to know about love? Saraghina will tell you: if you want to make a woman happy, you rely on what you were born with. Because it is in your blood! [singing] Saraghina: Be - Italian, Be Italian, Take a chance and try to steal a fiery kiss, Be Italian, Be Italian, When you hold me, Don't just hold me, But - hold - this! Please - be gentle, Sentimental, Go ahead and try to give my cheek a pat, But be daring, And uncaring, When you pinch me, Try to pinch me where there's fat! Be a singer! Chorus: Be a singer! Saraghina: Be a lover! Chorus: Be a lover! Saraghina: Pick the flower now before the chance is past! Chorus: Before it's past! Saraghina: Be Italian! Chorus: Be Italian! Saraghina: Be Italian! Chorus: Be Italian! Saraghina: Live today as if it may become - your - last!"
