Early in the film, the elderly character Mrs. Beryl (played by Jessica Tandy) says, "I think this may be the year God finally lowers the boom on me." The character's words proved sadly to be prophetic. Jessica Tandy did in fact die before the theatrical release of the film.
Filmed during the brutal New York winter season of 1993/1994, the town of Beacon and Poughkeepsie took a pounding as you can see the snow in the entire film.
Bruce Willis was not originally included in the advertising for this film because of his reputation for being an action star.
Jessica Tandy's final role.
Paul Newman and Bruce Willis previously appeared in The Verdict (1982). Similarities about both projects is the fact Willis went uncredited on both films (he was an extra in that film); Newman received Oscar nominations as Best Actor in a Leading Role for both films, and both were adapted from novels.
"Carl Roebuck: Sixty years old and still getting crushes on other men's wives. I would hope by the time I'm your age, I'm a little smarter than that. Sully: Can't hurt to hope. You sure are off to a slow start."
"Judge Flatt: Ollie, you know my feelings about arming morons: you arm one, you've got to arm them all, otherwise it wouldn't be good sport."
