The girl in the red dress, running through the field at the beginning of the movie, was played by Moira Sinise, the wife of director/star Gary Sinise.
When the film premiered in Cannes, Gary Sinise credited Sherilyn Fenn's performance as one of the reasons the film received a standing ovation.
In total, there were fifteen differences from the novel and the film, including the ending in both.
Curley's wife has an unrevealed name, but actress Sherilyn Fenn gave her the name "Daisy."
Roger Ebert gave great compliments to whole movie itself by giving it a 3.5 star rating out of a possible four. Ebert's description on what he viewed was pure and lean as the original novel John Steinbeck wrote, formed in his wisdom. Ebert included that the film had a quiet triumph all along.
"George: Guys like us that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world. They ain't got no family and they don't belong no place. They got nothin' to look ahead to... Lennie: But not us George. Tell about us. George: ...well, we ain't like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody cares. Lennie: But not us, George, because I... see, I got you to look after me, but you got me to look after you."
"Lennie: You said I was your cousin! George: That was a lie. If I was a relative of yours, I'd shoot myself."
