This is the first direct adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" novel. There had been previous loose adaptations done in Japan by Shûji Terayama, 100 Years of Solitude (1981) and Farewell to the Ark (1984).
Gabriel García Márquez himself refused to sell the screen rights to his novel because he wanted it to be only a Spanish-spoken adaptation, and felt a film adaptation would not cover the entire plot due to its length. This adaptation is a TV show adapted in Spanish.
This is Netflix's most expensive Latin American-made project to date, with Colombian groups and indigenous communities constructing props and sets for the series.
"One Hundred Years of Solitude" author Gabriel García Márquez's sons Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha serve as producers on the show.
Three different versions of Macondo for different eras were built for the show.
