Paan Singh Tomar was a seven-time national steeplechase champion in the 1950s and 1960s.
According to newspaper reports it was reported that Tomar was shot when he was alive and was asking for water: "Any rajput here who could please give me some water"; Hawaldar Tribhuwan Singh started walking towards Tomar with some water but the Circle inspector shouted at him: "Tribhuwan, dacoit has no caste".
There's an inside story, an incident which happened between the Director, Tigmanshu Dhulia and the lead, Irrfan Khan. Both of them were classmates in National School of Drama, and there Tigmanshu had promised Irrfan that one day, he will try and get Irrfan one national award for acting. In the following phase of life, Irrfan got bored of mediocre television roles which he was getting to play, and expressed his desire to quit acting to Tigmanshu, on which the latter said, "Don't you remember? I'm gonna get you a national award, come let's make a film together." That's when Haasil (2003) happened, in which Irrfan's acting was praised critically and then, Irrfan won the National award for acting for Paan Singh Tomar, both the films were directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia.
Manoj Bajpayee wanted the lead role but Tigmanshu decided not to cast him due to financial reasons.
Khan trained for many months getting into shape.
"Journalist: You tricked the police of three states. This was quite a big scandal. Paan Singh Tomar: That's the misfortune of our country. I crossed 28 barriers & 7 water pits to become the national champion, nobody cared. But when I fooled the police and do a kidnapping then everybody started chanting, Paan Singh... Paan Singh! Journalist: I agree. Sports persons in this country are in a very poor condition. Paan Singh Tomar: Don't shed crocodile tears. Had I been only a mere sportsperson, would you've taken so much risk to come & interview me? Journalist: I agree."
