Damon Runyon's fairytale, sweet and funny, is told by director Frank Capra. Boozy, brassy Apple Annie, a beggar with a basket of apples, is as much as part of downtown New York as old Broadway itself. Bootlegger Dave the Dude is a sucker for her apples --- he thinks they bring him luck. But Dave and girlfriend Queenie Martin need a lot more than luck when it turns out that Annie is in a jam and only they can help: Annie's daughter Louise, who has lived all her life in a Spanish convent, is coming to America with a Count and his son. The count's son wants to marry Louise, who thinks her mother is part of New York society. It's up to Dave and Queenie and their Runyonesque cronies to turn Annie into a lady and convince the Count and his son that they are hobnobbing with New York's elite.

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Frank Capra wrote in his autobiography that the production was "shaped in the fires of discord and filmed in an atmosphere of pain, strain, and loathing."

According to the Bette Davis biography, "Fasten Your Seatbelts", the actress was furious when she read a Glenn Ford interview in which the actor claimed to have gotten her the part because of the boost she had given him years before in A Stolen Life (1946). Davis is quoted as saying, "Who is that son of a bitch that he should say he helped me have a comeback! That shitheel wouldn't have helped me out of a sewer!"

At one point, Apple Annie waves across the street to an unseen acquaintance called "Tallulah" who is opening in a play, an in-joke reference to Bette Davis' long-running feud with Tallulah Bankhead.

Shirley Jones signed to star, but Glenn Ford made Frank Capra replace Jones with his then girlfriend Hope Lange.

Frank Capra was disappointed with the final result, calling it a "miserable film". He was more than happy with Peter Falk's performance though, referring to it as "the one bright spark".

Popular Dialogues

"Junior: She's like a cockroach what turned into a butterfly!"

"Joy Boy: What's with her? Dave the Dude: Aah, she just wants a bunch of kids. Joy Boy: Kids? Aw, they're mean when they get on that kick."
