Based in part on Tamara Jenkins' own experiences of going through fertility treatments.
After reading the script, Kathryn Hahn was convinced that she had little chance of landing the lead. So she bought a plane ticket to New York City and took Tamara Jenkins out for dinner on a charm offensive. Despite an incident with a spilled glass of wine, it worked.
Shot over a period of 30 days.
Had its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, arriving on Netflix internationally 9 months later.
This is Tamara Jenkins' first film since her Oscar-nominated The Savages (2007) 11 years previously. She had spent the time as a writer for hire, teacher and being a new mother.
"Sadie: Oh, my God, look at us. We're like an ad for assholes. Rachel Biegler: You mean we're assholes, or we're part of an ad that's targeted to assholes? Sadie: No, it's just that whole... people with cappuccinos in their lofts, with their laptops, dogs, with messy hair. You know, that whole fantasy. It's not your fault. You guys are authentic and real, you've just been co-opted by cultural mechanisms that create desirability. I took a media and consumer society course. It was pretty life-altering."
