Qala is writer-director Anvita Dutt's latest venture in Hindi cinema. This musical drama is a unique tale of a girl caught up between ambition and her actual skill. Tired of her mother's expectations, Qala decides to pursue her passion once and for all. With Amit Trivedi handling the soundtrack and music, and Varun Grover responsible for the lyrics, Qala sure is a delight for those who love vintage music. Even the cinematography and visuals are on point, but that does not translate into a solid script and acting performances. The writing is not able to hold up to the stunning visuals from 1930s Kolkata on screen, which is just unfortunate. Some critics also mention that the cinematography does not really transport you to the yesteryears, given some element is definitely missing from the equation. All in all, it is an interesting experiment in cinema and if you are a true movie buff, you will thoroughly enjoy it.
