IMDb"Raincoat" is a moving Indian drama that explores the difficulties of interpersonal relationships and the contradictory aspects of nostalgia. The Rituparno Ghosh-directed movie deftly portrays the feelings of two ex-lovers, Ajay Devgn, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, when they reunite on a rainy afternoon. The film's simplicity and reality are its greatest assets since they allow it to explore the characters' many unsaid feelings and regrets. Devgn and Bachchan give outstanding performances that highlight their variety and capacity to elicit strong feelings from the audience through subtle facial expressions and conversation. The story is allowed to develop at a controlled pace under Ghosh's careful and subtle direction, reflecting the meditative mood of a rainy day. The film's gloomy appeal is enhanced by the sparse scenery and eerie musical composition. The core of human fragility and the enduring effects of previous relationships are brilliantly shown. It serves as a reminder that despite difficulties in life, there may still be times of empathy and connection that provide comfort and a glimpse of hope.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's role in the movie was offered to Kareena Kapoor because she was working on Bride & Prejudice (2004) and was thought to be unavailable. Later, she took the role back when Kapoor herself became unavailable due to her other professional commitments.
The film is inspired from O Henry's short story, 'The Gift of the Magi'.
The entire script was written by Rituparno Ghosh in Bengali. Since Ghosh is not adept in Hindi, he sought help from theatre personality Usha Ganguly to convert it to Hindi. In fact Ganguly is said to have supplemented the main working script along with Ghosh.
Ajay Devgn is working for the first time with a Bengali director.
The shooting of this movie started a day in advance on Monday 16 February 2004. There was a costume rehearsal scheduled for the Monday, but since the whole unit was ready, they began shooting. A puja was performed at the NTII studio before the first take.
