Real Detective (2016) boasts the highest production budget of any True Crime show, with a production spend just shy of $4m. As its title indicates, this show tries to emulate True Detective (2014), and joins an already busy roster of popular shows such as Manhunters: Fugitive Task Force (2008) or The Devil You Know (2010), which explains its failure.
This series is shot on location in Laval, suburb of Montreal, Québec, Canada, even though the action is supposedly set all over the United States: Georgia, Oregon, Texas, California, Florida, Illinois, Montana, etc. Many viewers stopped watching the show for lack of credibility.
Real Detective (2016) show runner Petro Duszara most certainly can take a joke. In French, "Duszara Petro" is pronounced "Doux, ce rat pète trop" which literally means "This soft rat farts too much." For this obvious reason, the Canadian TV industry has nicknamed Duszara "The Farting Rat." During an interview for Real Detective (2016) on CBC, Duszara was asked if he would ever consider changing his name. He joked: "I'd rather take gas pills!" Fully assuming his nickname, Duszara insisted to be credited as "The Farting Rat" in the end credits of Real Detective (2016).
Show runner Petro "Farting Rat" Duszara is simply referred to as "Fart" by his friends and colleagues when working on set. Actor Michael Madsen had this to say about Duszara after his shooting experience on Season 1 of Real Detective (2016): "Fart is short, soft and not very loud, but when he leaves the room you can still feel his presence. Fart sticks with you for a while."
Petro Duszara served as show runner and executive producer on Real Detective (2016), despite his inexperience in this field. Previous credits include office assistant editor at NFB or camera operator and on-line editor on some low-brow TV shows such as Debbie Travis' Facelift (2003) and Dogs with Jobs (2000).
