The film was designed for use with the Navigational Cinema technology which allows the viewer to choose between two ways the story can go at certain times within the film, ultimately featuring 96 different story possibilities. The feature is only present on the Blu-ray Disc version of the film. Another film with a similar gimmick was Final Destination 3 (2006), also from Warner Bros. under their subsidiary label New Line Cinema.
Jeffrey Combs (Dr. Richard Benjamin Vannacutt) is the only returning cast member from House on Haunted Hill (1999).
Due to the shooting location of Bulgaria, none of the minor characters or extras are given lines in the film as they couldn't speak any English.
A third installment in the series had been planned, but poor DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD sales for Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007) led to Dark Castle Entertainment to cancel these plans.
The film was low budget compared to the first, and as a result Ali Larter was too expensive to bring back for the sequel as Sara Wolfe. Archive footage of her character is used instead, and she is recast with Stilyana Mitkova for a brief hallucination scene with Ariel Wolfe.
"Michelle: [Kyle walks in on Michelle and Dr. Hammer having sex] Dude! Can you knock? Kyle: Someone's working 'hard' on their Ph.D. Michelle: Fuck you, Kyle!"
"Kyle: Pretty creepy, isn't it? You know, they say that the souls of the people that died here apparently still haunt the house. Michelle: You know, they also say that people who believe in ghost should be on Prozac. Kyle: I'm sorry, Michelle, I wasn't listening, I was looking at your breasts."
