By 1986, the original outdoor set from The Andy Griffith Show (1960) had been demolished, so the Mayberry town square had to be re-created in a small town in California. This results in the road that originally came to an end in front of the courthouse, now going straight on, being much wider, and a flagpole being in the middle of the street.
Andy and Helen had a baby after moving away from Mayberry (this was depicted in Mayberry R.F.D. (1968)). In this movie, however, there is no mention of Andy, Jr.
Ron Howard wasn't the only one with a family member in this TV Movie. (His father Rance Howard played the Preacher) Don Knotts real life daughter, Karen Knotts, had a small part also as Opie's Receptionist.
This is the first time Barney (Don Knotts) and Howard Sprague (Jack Dodson) appear together. They had both previously appeared in the premiere episode of "Mayberry RFD," but their characters didn't interact.
This was only the third time in the show's (and spin-off show's) history that Gomer and Goober appeared on-camera together. The other two times were The Andy Griffith Show (1960) in "The Fun Girls" and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. (1964) in "A Visit From Cousin Goober."
"Gomer Pyle: Well we think Barney's gonna win. He hasn't done nothin' stupid now for oh about a month."
"Briscoe Darling: Just jump in where you can, Sheriff, and hang on."
